European Football Championship - Tens of thousands of visitors again expected on Berlin's fan mile

For the German national soccer team's quarterfinal game against Spain, thousands of visitors are expected at the large fan mile on Brandenburger Tor in Berlin on Friday. The game starts at 18:00 hours, but both fan zones in the government district are likely to fill up well before kick-off - as was the case during the last round against Denmark.

The fan mile and the fan zones will also be crowded in Berlin and at the fan mile on Saturday, especially in the evening, when Turkey plays the Netherlands at 21:00 hours in the Olympiastadion. The organizers expect a large crowd at Brandenburger Tor as well.

Both quarterfinal games will be broadcast on the large fan miles. The fan zone will also be expanded, and the street of 17. June will reach as far as Bellevueallee. This area is expected to accommodate more than 50,000 people, and over 10,000 more in front of the large screens in front of the Reichstag building. A capacity of 70,000 people is estimated for this area.

Erdogan to attend the game

An additional challenge for the Berlin police will be the fact that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan plans to attend the game on Saturday at the Olympiastadion. Erdogan is considered a high-risk international head of government, and he will have a high security level. For his arrival, roads could be closed, and areas in the Olympiastadion and its surroundings will be secured. The airspace over Berlin is already restricted during the EM games.

Thousands of policemen will be in action both days to secure the fan zones, escort the visitors to the stadium, and above all, calm any possible celebrations, fireworks, bonfires, and car caravans after the games. Over 3,000 policemen were in action on the previous Saturday.

So far, the fan celebrations have mostly been peaceful and without major disturbances. However, it got louder and more aggressive at Zoo train station after the win against Denmark on Saturday. The police arrested some fans for offenses such as serious breach of peace, bodily harm, theft, insult, drug possession, and the use of emblems of unconstitutional and terrorist organizations.
