Tens of thousands celebrate at Christopher Street Day in Hamburg
There have been "no major issues" so far, the spokesperson said. Only one car from one of the participant groups in the parade had to drop out due to a technical malfunction. Around 60 walking groups and numerous trucks were registered for the demonstration.
The Hamburg CSD demonstration is one of the largest events of its kind in Germany. The rally commemorates June 28, 1969, when the police raided the Stonewall Inn gay bar in New York's Christopher Street, leading to clashes between activists and law enforcement. The uprising is considered the birth of the modern gay and lesbian movement.
As with the large CSD demonstrations in Cologne two weeks ago and in Berlin last weekend, the police in Hamburg did not expect any disturbances. According to the police spokesperson, the demonstration is usually trouble-free despite its size. "They just want to celebrate," he said.
Despite the large number of participants, including 60 walking groups and numerous trucks, only one car had to withdraw due to a technical issue. Luckily, the Hamburg CSD parade continued with minimal disruptions, as police anticipated a peaceful event, with the spokesperson stating, "They just want to celebrate."
