Ten Strategies for Consuming Emotional Upheaval During Debate Events
This periodic event that happens every four years has arrived once more. Unluckily, the exhilarating Olympic and Paralympic games have concluded—I'm referring to the intense presidential debate season. Tonight marks the single debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, and the drawn-out event might feel like it's lasted for weeks. If you wish to stay engaged while the television is running in the background or to help calm your nerves during those 90 minutes, I recommend having a variety of debate night treats ready.
When putting together this list, comfort snacks took priority. Quick, easily prepared air fryer treats come in handy for those swift moments when you don't want to miss any heated exchanges. Some low-maintenance meals are also advisable in case your energy levels begin to dip. Messy or sauce-laden treats should be avoided–something simple to clean up is a must-have, as you'll surely feel the urge to vent your feelings to your friends through intense text messages. A sweet treat is also included to indulge your emotions, whatever they may be.
Frozen Snacks
Look no further than your frozen food aisle for suitable snacks designed for such occasions. They're comforting, salty, crunchy, and simple to prepare. During these critical times, the air fryer is your best friend–it allows for quick cooking without losing any flavor. Have tater tots, French fries, pierogies, mozzarella sticks, chicken nuggets, mini samosas, pizza rolls, and your other favorite goodies on hand. Just set the air fryer temperature to 375°F and adjust the time accordingly.
Dumplings
Chicken or pork dumplings are an absolute favorite of mine because they provide a sense of satisfaction–though small, they make you feel full. I typically pick up bagged gyoza from Trader Joe's as they're both affordable and delightful. To achieve an extra-crisp texture, the air fryer is an excellent option. However, my preferred method of enjoyment involves steaming–the dumplings stay moist this way. Fill a pot with about half an inch of water, then place a steamer basket inside and pop in all the dumplings. Cover and let them steam for 10 minutes.
Pigs (or Pickles) in a Blanket
Swaddle yourself in a blanket for the debate, if you wish–it's not such a bad idea. But if that's too dramatic, enjoy some pigs in a blanket instead for a perfect blend of sweet and savory. They're a crowd-pleaser when hosting friends, but for a more precise and repetitive task, wrapping individual mini-dogs in small pastry rectangles is highly recommended.
Mushroom Delight
There are two methods to enjoy mushrooms: dried or stuffed. Both recipes are simple and fun to make with the help of the air fryer. Dried mushrooms can be transformed into crispy chips by using an air fryer, while stuffed mushrooms can provide a more substantial snack. Sausage-stuffed mushrooms are one of my go-to options.
Egg Roll Your Leftovers
Egg rolls are a comfort food favorite, whether you order them from a Chinese restaurant or make them yourself at home. Use this opportunity to clean out your fridge by egg rolling your leftovers. Simply purchase a package of fresh egg roll wrappers from the grocery store, fill them with whatever leftovers you have, brush them with oil, and air fry them.

Cheeseboard Sandwich
If hot food doesn't sound appealing, opt for a simple cheese board instead. Gather cheese, bread, meats, dried fruit, nuts, and salty butter. Cut big pieces of everything and make a substantial baguette cheeseboard sandwich.
Comfort Meats
When you crave bite-sized morsels of plain protein, take solace in these easy-to-eat treats. You can enjoy crispy air fryer kielbasa, steak bites, or flavorful slices of marinated air fryer pork tenderloin while pacing around your living room.
Three-Ingredient Dinners
Snack suppers may not appeal to everyone, but if you prefer a full meal with minimal effort, consider these simple three-ingredient meals. All are easy to make and take no more than 20 minutes to cook. Choose from a simple mac and cheese, savory tomato-cheese toast, or a quick and easy teriyaki chicken.
Ice Cream
Indulge in a pint of your favorite ice cream, if you wish, once a year. While you could make your own, consider opting for a no-churn Pop-Tart ice cream, provided you factor in the freeze time and create it earlier in the day.
When it comes to pleasing, soothing, minimal-effort sweets, you can always depend on Rice Krispies Treats. It's wise to always have marshmallows and some cereal in stock, ensuring a quick fix in times of necessity. In this method I skip the complex marshmallow-filled pot process and instead melt the butter and marshmallows in a bowl using the microwave. It's quicker and leaves fewer dishes to clean.
With this complete line-up of snacks, you should feel more assured heading into the main event. At the very least, you'll have something to keep you occupied during downtime. Oh, I almost forgot, I need to buy more marshmallows. Good luck!
During the debate night, having a variety of quick and easy air fryer treats like tater tots, French fries, and chicken nuggets can help keep you engaged and occupied. If you're looking for something more substantial, bagged gyoza from the frozen food aisle can be a satisfying choice, particularly when air fried for an extra-crispy texture.
