Police - Temporary weapons ban zone in Fulda

The city of Fulda will implement a temporary weapons ban for some areas around the so-called Bermuda Triangle near Karlstraße during the Football European Championship. The ban will take effect starting Saturday, 29. June, as the Landkreis Fulda announced on Thursday. The ordinance was issued in consultation with the police and the city of Fulda. The ban will be in effect from all match days starting at 4 pm until the following day at 6 am.

The authorities expect, given that the German team has reached the quarterfinals, a further increase in the already heavy public traffic – before, during, and after the match broadcasts. This particularly applies to Public-Viewing areas around Canal- and lower Karlstraße.

Due to the increased number of people, rising alcohol consumption, and potentially conflicting fan camps, verbal and physical altercations cannot be ruled out according to police experience. If a weapon or a knife is used in such situations, there is a significant risk to life or limb. This is the police's assessment, which justifies the establishment of a temporary weapons prohibition zone.

Within the weapons prohibition zone, firearms, revolvers, and edged weapons are prohibited. Also prohibited are knives with a fixed or foldable blade longer than four centimeters.

Despite the now temporarily established weapons prohibition zone in the Landkreis Fulda, it is being investigated whether and where permanent weapons prohibition zones can be set up in the district.

  1. The Bermuda Triangle near Karlstraße in Fulda will be under a temporary weapons ban during the European Football Championship, affecting several municipalities in the district.
  2. The City of Fulda and the police have collaborated to enforce a weapons ban in areas surrounding Soccer public-viewing sites, including Canal- and lower Karlstraße.
  3. As a result of the high public traffic and potential conflicts among fans, the Federal Ministry of the Interior supports the weapons ban, establishing a weapons prohibition zone.
  4. Hesse authorities are considering establishing permanent weapons prohibition zones throughout the District of Fulda, following the success of the temporary ban during the European Football Championship.
  5. The weapons ban will impact various soccer events, prohibiting firearms, revolvers, and edged weapons within the zone, as well as knives with longer blades.
  6. Violations of the weapons prohibition zone may result in criminal charges and consequences from the local police force.
