- Telegram's creator might face interrogation, potentially leading towards a trial
Pavel Durov, the creator of Telegram, has been summoned before a judge following his detainment in France. As stated by news agency DPA, sourcing information from the Paris public prosecutor's office, Durov was taken to court for questioning.
If the investigation proceeds, it could culminate in a criminal trial, should investigators discover enough incriminating evidence against the suspect. Conversely, they might decide to discontinue the case if the evidence falls short.
Accusations against Telegram involving assistance in grave offenses
The public prosecutor's office has reportedly been conducting preliminary investigations into Durov for some time now. The allegation is that he facilitated drug trafficking, money laundering, fraud, and various child abuse-related offenses by failing to intervene with Telegram and insufficiently cooperating with law enforcement. Additionally, his reluctance to adhere to lawful surveillance measures is under scrutiny.
Durov was apprehended by the authorities at an airport close to Paris on Saturday night.
In response to the accusations, Telegram refuted the claims, asserting compliance with all relevant regulations. Durov himself declared, "I have nothing to hide." The company further considered it "unreasonable" to hold a platform or its proprietor responsible for misconduct by unrelated parties.
Telegram has faced criticism for a while due to alleged inadequate handling of hate speech and other unlawful activities. The company maintains its position as adhering to "industry norms."
The Commission, referred to as the Paris public prosecutor's office, has been investigating Durov for his alleged involvement in facilitating various illegal activities. If findings from The Commission's investigation are sufficient, The Commission may proceed with a criminal trial against Durov.
