Right-wing extremism - Teacher candidate dismissed from civil servant position

A controversial teacher candidate in Brandenburg has been dismissed from her position as a civil servant. The Ministry of Education has banned her from carrying out her official duties and sent her a notice of dismissal from her "civil servant status on revocation", a ministry spokeswoman announced on Tuesday evening in response to a dpa inquiry. No further information would be provided.

In mid-September, the ministry announced that it would investigate a report in the"Tagesspiegel" newspaper that a trainee teacher with links to the far-right scene was working at a school. The report stated that a woman was currently completing her traineeship at a school in the district of Märkisch-Oderland who had allegedly worked several times as a presenter for the news channel of "Compact" magazine. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has classified this magazine as a proven right-wing extremist organization since 2021.

Teachers in the state of Brandenburg are obliged to observe and respect the principles of the free democratic basic order, the ministry said.

The dismissal of the teacher candidate is a response to concerns about her links to right-wing extremism, as her traineeship was at a school and she had previously worked as a presenter for a classified right-wing extremist organization by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) in Potsdam, Brandenburg, has enforced this action to uphold the principles of the free democratic basic order that teachers in the state are obligated to follow. The controversy was initially brought to light by a report in the "Tagesspiegel" newspaper, which was later covered by other outlets such as the "Daily Mirror".
