Thanks to tax evasion in a Chinese restaurant, a married couple and two other individuals found themselves facing legal consequences at the Kiel District Court. Using a malleable cash register system, these four defendants managed to bypass over four million euros in taxes from 2011-2018, according to the judge's statement on Tuesday.

The primary defendant, a 45-year-old man and owner of the restaurant, was found guilty of tax evasion in 48 instances and was given a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence.

His wife, who once managed the restaurant, along with the other two defendants, each received a two-year probation sentence. They were also accused of tax evasion in multiple instances, but they were merely acting as proxies, said the court. The couple will also have to repay around 1.9 million euros.

The defendants have the option to appeal the verdict within a week.

The judge noted that certain parts of the sentences had already been enacted due to the duration of the case and because the defendants had no criminal record or history of being repeat offenders. Additionally, black purchases and unlawful wages were taken into consideration when calculating the amount the couple had to repay.

The main defendant confessed to his wrongdoings at the conclusion of the trial in late April. He explained that he'd borrowed money from his in-laws to start the restaurant and wished to repay the debt swiftly while simultaneously catering to his family's needs, consisting of five people.

There were earlier searches at the restaurant in 2013, yet the defendants failed to perceive these as warning signs. Eventually, significant deletions in cash register records were found using data gathered from a USB stick. The data on this USB stick revealed accurate earnings for specific time frames.
