Taubert rejects CDU demand to waive lawsuit

Finance Minister Heike Taubert has rejected the opposition CDU parliamentary group's demand that the state government waive its right to sue over land transfer tax. The CDU had made its willingness to negotiate on the controversial 2024 state budget dependent on this. The SPD minister explained in Erfurt on Thursday that it must be examined in court whether the law presented by the CDU and passed together with the AfD and FDP is constitutional. The law is intended to reduce the tax on real estate purchases from 6.5 to 5.0 percent.

CDU parliamentary group leader Mario Voigt explained that "anyone who takes legal action against tax relief for citizens is not a negotiating partner for us". Voigt's demand was first reported by the "Thüringer Allgemeine" (Thursday). The state budget with record expenditure of 13.8 billion euros has been in the state parliament for weeks. The red-red-green government coalition is dependent on a compromise with the opposition because it lacks the majority to pass its own budget resolution.

Taubert's rejection of the CDU's demand affects not only the budget negotiation but also potential future household purchases, as the court's decision on the constitutionality of the land transfer tax law could impact real estate purchase taxes.

The CDU parliamentary group's stance on negotiating with Taubert hinges on their belief that challenging tax relief for citizens is unacceptable, which could potentially impact household financial planning.
