Synod discusses new election again
Following the failed election of a new church president, the synod of the Evangelical Church of Anhalt will once again discuss the appointment at its meeting on November 17. This was announced by the regional church on Wednesday. At the special meeting in September, neither of the two candidates received the required 21 votes after three rounds of voting.
There were two candidates at the time: Birgit Neumann-Becker, who has been the Saxony-Anhalt State Commissioner for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship since 2013, and the pastor Georg Neugebauer from Aken. The current church president Joachim Liebig will retire after his third term of office in March 2024.
With around 26,200 members, the Anhalt Regional Church is the smallest of the Protestant regional churches in Germany. The EKD has a total of more than 19.1 million Christians.
During the synod meeting on November 17, the personal details of the new church president candidate might be scrutinized for transparency. Despite failing to secure enough votes in September, both candidates, Birgit Neumann-Becker and Georg Neugebauer, are expected to present their qualifications once more.
