Soccer - Swiss national coach: Sommer will be in goal at the European Championships
Former Bayern keeper Yann Sommer will continue to keep goal for the Swiss national soccer team at next year's European Championships. Gregor Kobel from Borussia Dortmund will initially remain in the role of substitute. This was announced by the coach of the Swiss, who will face hosts Germany, Scotland and Hungary in Group A, in the soccer talk show Heimspiel. "Yann Sommer is the number one and will remain so. He will be in goal at the European Championship," said Murat Yakin.
Sommer turns 35 this Sunday and has played 87 international matches for Switzerland. After several years with Borussia Mönchengladbach, he moved to FC Bayern at the beginning of this year due to Manuel Neuer's injury at the time. Sommer has been playing for Inter Milan in Serie A since August.
Kobel celebrated his 26th birthday earlier this month and has been playing for BVB since the summer of 2021. He has only made five appearances for the Swiss national team so far. "We had given the other goalkeepers the opportunity to play in goal during the European Championship qualifiers," explained Yakin. Unfortunately, Kobel had to withdraw twice through injury.
