In the fight against the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF), around 115 kilometers of tactical electric fences have been set up in southern Hesse. "In the coming days, the installation of another 20 kilometers of tactical electric fences is planned," the Ministry of Agriculture in Wiesbaden told dpa on request. This is predominantly to fill gaps in the fencing.

Electric fences around the core area of the infection will prevent the spread of infected or diseased wild boar. "In principle, we are still in a very dynamic situation, and the installation of tactical electric fences can be adjusted at short notice to the situation," a ministry spokeswoman said. The costs for the protective fences are currently being covered by the state.

ASF was first detected in a wild boar in the district of Groß-Gerau about six weeks ago. The viral disease is incurable and almost always fatal for wild and domestic pigs. According to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, it is harmless to humans and other animal species. So far, eight pig farmers have been affected, all in the district of Groß-Gerau.

The installation of additional tactical electric fences aims to further distribute the barrier against the spread of African Swine Fever. Adjustments to the distribution of these fences can be made quickly to adapt to the evolving situation.
