- Swedish heads renewed at the entrance to Wismar harbour
Wismar's Harbour Welcomes Back Its Landmarks
Just in time for the upcoming Swedish Festival in the historic Hanseatic city, which kicks off on Friday, the two colourfully painted Swedish heads have returned to adorn the harbour entrance. The old and iconic wooden Hercules busts had previously undergone a facelift.
The city invested approximately 55,000 euros for the renovation, carried out by employees of the Waste Management and Transport Authority. This included renewing the pile construction of the western Swedish head near the sea bridge, carrying out repair and painting work on both heads, and renewing the corrosion protection on both steel masts of the Swedish heads. The piles of the eastern Swedish head, which are driven into the seabed, had already been renewed ten years ago.
Reminder of the Swedish Era
The Swedish heads at the harbour entrance are replicas of the baroque originals made of oak wood, which can be seen in the City Historical Museum Schabbell. For centuries, these colourfully painted heads have adorned the entrance to the harbour. Replicas of the Swedish heads can be seen at various locations in the city, serving as a reminder of the more than 150-year Swedish period following the Thirty Years' War.
City of Wismar
The renovated Swedish heads, now vibrant and restored, serve as prominent monuments at the city of Wismar's harbour entrance. These monuments are a testament to the enduring Swedish influence in the city's rich history.
