Processes - Suspicion of embezzlement: Berlin LKA official goes on trial

On Tuesday (9.30 a.m.), a former head of the Berlin police department will stand trial in Tiergarten district court on suspicion of embezzlement and misappropriation. The 61-year-old is alleged to have diverted around 73,000 euros for himself over a period of years. According to the public prosecutor's office, the man had been responsible at the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) for providing logistics for undercover operations by the Berlin police, among other things. He had exploited this position to divert money to himself.

According to the public prosecutor's office at the arraignment, the now suspended officer's financial difficulties "due to a tendency to gamble" were a possible motive. The 61-year-old is accused of 16 alleged offenses between September 2017 and August 2021. In 15 cases, the offense involved sums of money, and in one case he embezzled a scooter. Internal police checks ultimately led to the discovery of the crimes. The court has scheduled one trial day so far.
