Suspension of Hearings for Four Climate Protesters Charged with Highway Demonstration

The proceedings on the charges against four climate activists, accused of participating in a bridge-hanging protest on the A7 highway in November 2020, have been temporarily halted. The suspension was announced by a representative from the Flensburg Regional Court. The specific new start date has not been set yet. The reasons given for the suspension include complications in scheduling and a shift in the court chamber's composition. It was discovered during the proceedings that the original assigned dates were inadequate.

On January 5, 2023, the Local Court in Schleswig found the three women and one man guilty of coercion, each receiving a fine of 60 daily installments of 20 euros. They contested this decision, leading to the ongoing appeal hearing.

As per the Local Court's statement, the activists were involved in an action that took place on November 27, 2020, approximately 8:15 AM. Three of the accused individuals descended from the Hüsby bridge over the A7 close to Schleswig, remaining there. At that time, the A7 was significantly congested, without a speed limit. Their objective was to spotlight what they perceived as the essential traffic transformation.

Despite the ongoing appeal hearing, the local court's focus has temporarily shifted towards addressing other cases related to [Transport and telecommunications] regulations, causing a delay in the climate protesters' case. The court's diverse dynamics and the need to prioritize other urgent matters have contributed to this reorganization of the schedule.
