A man who allegedly attacked a Green Party politician in Göttingen has been found to have used Nazi symbols in the past. Last July, he was fined a total of 900 euros for displaying a Reichsadler with a swastika in a wreath in his WhatsApp profile picture, as the prosecutor revealed on Thursday. The "Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung" had previously reported this.
Marie Kollenrott, a Lower Saxony state parliamentarian, was hurt and assaulted during a campaign event in the Göttingen city center on Saturday. The suspect assaulted her multiple times in the upper body. Kollenrott sustained bruises on one arm, she said. The police quickly apprehended the alleged attacker near the crime scene. The authorities are now examining the case for potential political crimes.
