Investigations - Suspected war criminal arrested
The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe has arrested a Syrian man in Baden-Württemberg on suspicion of crimes against humanity. The man arrested in the Rhine-Neckar district is alleged to have mistreated civilians in Syria as a member of the terrorist militia Hezbollah; one person was shot dead, as the highest German prosecution authority announced on Wednesday. An arrest warrant was issued for the man at the end of November; he is now in custody. He is accused of crimes against humanity through torture and deprivation of liberty as well as war crimes.
According to the information, the crimes were committed between 2012 and 2013 in the Syrian village of Busra Al Sham. Among other things, the accused and other Hezbollah members allegedly attacked residents of a house, stole numerous items and ordered the house to be set on fire. One person died from a gunshot wound. Another civilian was arrested in 2013, beaten and then handed over to the secret service along with two others. There, the three victims were abused by prison guards.
