Duisburg - Suspected vending machine burglar escapes from court
A suspected ATM burglar has managed to escape from Duisburg district court. This was announced by the NRW Ministry of Justice to the state parliament in Düsseldorf. The man had been taken from the prison in Heinsberg to Duisburg to testify in another trial. He probably managed to escape there because the door of a presentation cell was unlocked.
According to initial findings, this was due to repair and renovation work, reported the President of the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court. Because of the work, a cell had been used that is not normally used. One of the doors to this cell had not been locked. It led into the inner courtyard of the court.
Due to the renovation work, the inner courtyard had not been secured with a fence as usual. The prisoner on remand had managed to escape last Friday. However, he was caught on Tuesday and put back behind bars. The district court in Duisburg is examining supervisory measures due to the unlocked door.
