Suspected smuggler's car overturns on highway
A suspected smuggler's car carrying seven people overturned on the A96 at the Lindau junction on Friday evening. According to initial police investigations, six of the occupants were Turkish migrants. Customs officers had previously wanted to pull the car out of traffic for an inspection.
According to the police, the driver of the car initially heeded the patrol's signal to follow, but then accelerated and drove off. The officers later found the car lying on its roof. The driver had lost control of the vehicle on a bend. The occupants of the car, including a family with three children, were taken to hospital.
According to the police, an initially unknown smuggler had brought six of the passengers across the border in a van with ten other migrants in the afternoon. Near Rosenheim, the 37-year-old driver of the vehicle that was later involved in the accident picked up the six migrants to take them to Switzerland. A 26-year-old, who was also in the car, had organized the trip with the 37-year-old.
The two men are now being investigated for smuggling offenses. With the exception of the driver, all the passengers have been charged with illegal entry and illegal residence.
The investigation revealed that the smuggler's vehicle had a history of accidents due to its reckless driving, raising concerns about migrant safety. Despite the high risk of such accidents, migration to seek better opportunities continues to be a significant issue in Swabia.
