Suspected smuggler's car flies out of the bend: injured
Seven people have been injured in an accident involving a suspected smuggler's car on the Autobahn 96 near Lindau (Lake Constance). A family of five with three children aged three, six and nine as well as two other men were in the vehicle on Friday evening, as the federal police announced on Saturday evening. The 37-year-old driver and a 26-year-old passenger are now being investigated on suspicion of smuggling.
According to initial investigations, six of the seven occupants had previously been transported to Germany illegally in a van with ten other migrants. They were then dropped off near Rosenheim. According to the federal police, the journey was to continue from there to Switzerland. The 26-year-old passenger is said to have organized the onward journey from Rosenheim to Switzerland.
A civilian customs patrol wanted to check the vehicle near Sigmarszell at around 10 p.m., according to reports. The driver of the car initially obeyed the following signal, but then drove off at high speed. Shortly afterwards, police and customs found the car lying on its roof at the Lindau highway exit. Apparently, the driver had lost control of his vehicle due to the excessive speed on the bend.
All seven occupants of the overcrowded car were taken to hospital, and all but the 37-year-old driver have since been released, it was reported. According to the information provided, six of the seven occupants were Turkish migrants. All occupants except the driver have been charged with illegal entry and residence.
This incident on the Autobahn 96 raises concerns about both migration and crime. The alleged smugglers, under investigation, had transported several migrants illegally, leading to traffic accidents. Their overcrowded car, attempting to evade a customs check, careened out of control on a bend, resulting in injuries and subsequent charges for illegal entry and residence.
