Suspected smuggler arrested at the border in Western Pomerania
A suspected people smuggler was arrested by the federal police near the former German-Polish border crossing at Blankensee (Vorpommern-Greifswald district) late on Monday evening. According to the federal police on Tuesday, there were nine people in a van with Latvian registration, which had no seats in the back, who were probably Afghan. They included a woman, two girls and six men. The driver was a 52-year-old Ukrainian.
A week earlier, a Ukrainian was also caught in the region, near Löcknitz, as a suspected smuggler. The man is said to have brought two Afghans and a man from Iran to Germany from Poland. An arrest warrant was issued for the 31-year-old suspect shortly afterwards. He is in custody in Neustrelitz prison.
The increasing number of migration attempts through Western Pomerania has led to an increase in related crimes, such as people smuggling. The arrest of the 52-year-old Ukrainian, suspected of smuggling Afghans and an Iranian, is a prime example of this crime issue.
