Frankfurt Regional Court - Suspected Islamist in court: "Great stupidity done"
The trial of a 19-year-old suspected sympathizer of the Islamic State terrorist militia has begun at Frankfurt Regional Court. The prosecution accuses the German of preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state. In court on Thursday, the man largely admitted the charge. He spoke of a "great stupidity" that he had committed. Although he had wanted to take part in the war, he would certainly have become "quick cannon fodder".
According to the results of the investigation, the accused is said to have become radicalized at the end of 2022 and decided to leave for Iraq to fight in the armed forces. In March of this year, he finally made the journey by car - but with a police liaison officer at his side. He is said to have told this person during the journey that he wanted to kill "500 infidels". However, the accused is not said to have been in possession of any weapons.
According to the indictment, the journey ended shortly before the Austrian border when the young man was arrested at a highway service station and has been in custody ever since. One of the issues at stake in the trial before the juvenile criminal chamber is whether the more lenient juvenile criminal law should be applied or whether he should be sentenced as an adult. The court has initially scheduled four further trial days until mid-January.

The radicalization of the suspect, which led to his support for the IS and plans to join their armed forces, occurred towards the end of 2022 in Frankfurt on the Main, Hesse. Despite his intentions, theExtremist's criminal activities mainly involved discussions of violence and a desire to kill "500 infidels," but no actual weapons were found during his apprehension by authorities near the Austrian border. The Frankfurt Regional Court will continue the trial, considering whether the juvenile or adult criminal law should apply to the alleged IS sympathizer.
