Higher Regional Court Frankfurt - Suspected "IS" member on trial: training in Iraq
The trial of a 31-year-old man for membership of a terrorist organization and war crimes against property has begun at Frankfurt Higher Regional Court. According to the indictment, he and his wife left Germany for Syria via Turkey in spring 2016. There, he had registered as a member of the terrorist organization "Islamic State".
The journey then continued to Iraq, where he received weapons training in Mosul. Finally, he took up a "responsible position in logistics" with "IS", according to the indictment read out on the first day of the trial on Friday.
In August 2017, the man, who had lived in several houses previously confiscated by "IS" during his stay in Iraq, was arrested by Kurdish forces. It took until the end of 2022 for him to be extradited to Germany. He was finally spared custody at the end of March this year.
On the first day of the trial, he first spoke about himself and then about the accusation. He admitted that he had been in Syria and Iraq at the time in question. He was married to his wife according to Islamic rites. The State Security Senate has initially set eight continuation dates until the beginning of March.
