Terrorism - Suspected IS member arrested in Gütersloh

The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office arrested a suspected member of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia in Gütersloh on Tuesday. According to the Karlsruhe authority's statement, the man is believed to have fought for IS in Iraq between 2014 and 2017. The suspect was presented to the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice on Wednesday and is now in remand prison.

The man is "strongly suspected" of membership in a terrorist organization abroad, it continued. He was in various fighting units and was paid by IS for this. The arrest on Tuesday was reportedly carried out by officers of the Federal Criminal Police.

IS once controlled large areas in Syria and Iraq and is considered militarily defeated today. However, IS cells are still active in both countries and carry out attacks.

  4. Terrorism and extremism linked to IS continue to pose threats in Iraq and Syria, as cells remain active and carry out attacks despite IS’s military defeat.
