Suspected Hamas members arrested in Berlin are remanded in custody
According to the federal prosecutor's office, Al A., who was born in Lebanon, is said to have been instructed by Hamas leaders to search for a secret underground weapons cache previously set up by the organization. The weapons were to be brought to Berlin and kept ready for possible attacks on Jewish institutions in Europe.
The attack plans were not yet concrete. Al A. and the Egyptian B. are said to have set off from Berlin several times in October in search of the weapons. They were reportedly accompanied by the Dutchman Nazih R., who was arrested in Rotterdam on Thursday. A European arrest warrant had been issued for him by the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice. Ibrahim El-R., who was born in Lebanon, is said to have supported the others.
As the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office explained on Thursday, all four suspects are said to have belonged to Hamas for years, participated in the organization's actions abroad and had close contacts with leaders of the military wing. All four of those arrested are therefore urgently suspected of membership of a foreign terrorist organization.
