Surviving "Verity" sailor thanks his rescuers
One of two survivors of the sunken "Verity" in the North Sea met his rescuers on Friday. "He actively approached the navy with the express wish to say thank you," said Johannes Dumrese, head of the navy's press and information center in Nordholz. The man was adrift in the North Sea after the shipwreck and was pulled on board a helicopter by the crew using a winch. NDR had previously reported on the meeting.
According to NDR, 27-year-old Alex Kolesnikov said that he owed his life to the naval aviators. In addition to him, a second sailor who was rescued by a cruise ship had also survived. According to the report, Kolesnikov made a donation to the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS), who were also involved in the search, as the navy is not allowed to accept donations.
On 24 October, the coaster "Verity", loaded with steel plates, and the larger freighter "Polesie", 190 meters in length, collided in the German Bight around 22 kilometers southwest of Helgoland. The "Verity" sank quickly as a result. The authorities believe that five sailors lost their lives in the accident. Four of them are still missing.
The rescued sailor expressed his gratitude to the naval aviators for saving his life, highlighting the importance of their role in the shipwreck accidents. Despite the harrowing incident, another sailor was lucky enough to survive the accident, which involved the sunken ship "Verity."
