Pedelecs - Survey: Lower Saxony has the most e-bike owners
The number of E-bike riders in Lower Saxony has increased further, according to a new survey. According to the survey conducted by energy supplier Eon and published on a Thursday, 32.6% of the residents of the federal state own a bicycle with electric assistance. This was 27.2% a year ago, which was also the highest figure at that time, shared with Schleswig-Holstein.
The survey was conducted by market research institute Civey between mid-May and early June, with 30,000 people aged 18 and above in Germany participating online. In second place among the federal states was Baden-Württemberg with 27.4% (25.2% previous year). In Bremen, the percentage was 20.7% (20.9%). Nationwide, 24.7% of all interviewees rode a bicycle with electric assistance. In 2023, when the survey was conducted two months earlier, this figure was 23.3%.
According to the survey, electric bicycles are particularly popular in the districts of Emsland and Grafschaft Bentheim. 47.3% of the respondents there reported owning an E-bike. The county was the clear leader last year with 39.4%. The two districts therefore stand out in the national comparison.
Interest is also growing among younger people and on vacation
The survey also reveals that the ownership of electric bicycles has increased significantly among the 18-29 year olds. Nationwide, 17.5% (13.8% previous year) of the interviewees in this age group now own an electric bicycle. The electric bicycle is still most popular among the over 65s (27.7%).
Of the interviewees, 10,000 were asked to explain the reasons for purchasing an E-bike. As in the previous year, many interviewees cited environmental friendliness. 40.7% stated that they charged their bike at home with green electricity. There is also interest in cycling on vacation. A multi-day cycling trip with electric assistance, for example, can be imagined by a quarter of the interviewees. For the commute to work, it was used by 6.8% according to the survey.
