Pedelecs - Survey: Almost one in four Hesse residents owns an e-bike

Every fourth Hessian, according to a survey by energy supplier Eon, has an E-Bike. The proportion is 22.3 percent and has decreased slightly compared to the previous year, as shown in the survey published by Eon on Thursday. The proportion was still 23.8 percent the previous year. In nationwide comparison, Hessen still ranks in the middle.

For the survey, market research institute Civey interviewed 30,000 citizens aged 18 and over in Germany online from mid-May to early June. The leader is still Lower Saxony, where almost every third citizen owns an E-Bike (previous year: 27.2 percent). Baden-Württemberg is in second place with 27.4 percent (25.2 percent), and the proportion in Bavaria is 26.4 percent (25.2 percent). Nationwide, 24.7 percent of all interviewees ride a bicycle with electric assistance. In 2023, when the survey was two months earlier, it was still 23.3 percent.

E-bikes come in various forms. With Pedelecs, the rider is supported by an electric motor up to a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour. They are legally considered bicycles. S-Pedelecs are faster and are classified as light electric vehicles, with motor assistance being cut off at 45 km/h. The motor of real E-bikes, on the other hand, functions even when not pushing on the pedals. This makes them comparable to electric scooters.
