- Supermarket roof collapses after heavy rain near Bremen
In the districts of Verden and Diepholz, heavy rain has led to flooded streets and basements. In the Syke suburb of Barrien, the roof of a supermarket collapsed. As the market is currently being renovated, the water could easily enter.
"The roof was open due to expansion work," said Lutz Budelmann, spokesman for the local fire department in the district of Diepholz. Around 20 people immediately left the store, and there were no injuries. The market is closed, and a structural engineer will now be called in. "This was a thunderstorm cell with heavy rain, hundreds of liters of water came down," the spokesman explained.
There were around 20 incidents in Weyhe, including a flooded railway underpass. Near Weyhe, a tree fell on parked cars, as a police spokesman reported. In the area of Twistringen, a tree fell on a moving car, but no one was injured.
The heavy rain in Diepholz district also caused leaks in some buildings, potentially leading to further damage. Despite the weather, the market in Syke will remain closed until a structural engineer examines it.
