Sunak announces resignation as Tory party leader after election defeat

The Conservatives suffered the worst election result in their history in the vote. After counting almost all votes, the party of Prime Minister Sunak secured 119 seats - significantly fewer than in their previous worst election result in 1906, when they won 156 seats. The opposition Labour Party led by Keir Starmer, however, secured an absolute majority in the House of Commons. They obtained 410 of the total 650 seats.

As a result, Sunak is rejected as British Prime Minister. He will now submit his resignation to King Charles III before Labour leader Starmer is commissioned by him to form a government.

Sunak faced criticism and consequent election defeat, leading to his resignation as Prime Minister. The Tories failed to maintain their position in Great Britain, securing fewer seats than in their previous worst election result in 1906. On the other hand, Keir Starmer's Labour Party celebrated its victory, achieving an absolute majority and becoming the Party leader's ticket to form a new government in Downing Street.
