- Summer holiday: Too few blood donations in Hesse
In Hessen, the German Red Cross (DRK) reports that blood supplies are gradually running low. "We have about 10 to 15 percent fewer donations than we need for a secure supply," said Martin Oesterer from the DRK's blood donation service. The demand from hospitals is currently higher than the supply of blood, especially for blood types A negative and 0 negative.
More Tourists, Fewer Blood Donors
"It's always the case in the summer that donors are on vacation," said Oesterer. Those who have been in a malaria-risk area like Thailand on vacation cannot donate for six months afterwards. This summer, the UEFA European Championship and the Olympic Games have also contributed to this: for example, some football matches were held at times when many people usually visit the donation centers, according to Oesterer.
Thomas Steiner, spokesperson for the University Hospital Gießen and Marburg, remained calm. "It's always a bit thin over the holidays," he said. The supply situation is comparable to that of previous summers. "We always prepare for this," said the spokesperson. The University Hospital Darmstadt also stated that they are "still very well equipped."
Blood Donations Possible Even in High Temperatures
Those who wish to donate blood do not have to wait for the cooler autumn: blood donation in summer temperatures is not necessarily dangerous, although this myth persists, according to Oesterer. Drink plenty of water before the appointment, eat enough, and rest afterwards - then blood donation can be done without any worries. There is also no longer an age limit.
In Hessen, the shortage of blood donations is also a concern during the summer, as many donors are on vacation or attending events like the UEFA European Championship and the Olympic Games. Despite the decrease in donations, the University Hospital Gießen and Marburg and the University Hospital Darmstadt maintain that they are still well-equipped.
