Sulphurous substance in lime plant catches fire
The fire department extinguished a fire in a silo at a lime works in Regensburg on Friday. According to the city's fire and disaster control department, a sulphurous substance caught fire at midday - initially there was a risk of explosion. Extinguishing the individual sources of the fire continued until Friday evening. The site is to be checked again on Saturday night and Saturday morning. No one was injured. The cause of the fire and the amount of damage were initially unknown.
The fire department contained the risk of explosion by using carbon dioxide. There were also fears that the emergency services could be poisoned. There had been a heavy build-up of smoke.
The smoke had also spread to operating facilities of the lime works and a second silo. A large area was cordoned off and the public was warned. The adjacent Regensburg-Schwandorf railroad line was also affected by the closure. The fire department carried out measurements within a radius of around two kilometers, but was unable to detect any air pollution from harmful substances.
The fire in OBERPFALZ, specifically at the lime works in Regensburg, spread to nearby operating facilities and a second silo, necessitating a large area to be cordoned off. Due to the fires and emergencies, there were concerns about potential air pollution affecting the adjacent Regensburg-Schwandorf railroad line.
