Sullivan, Biden's national security advisor, journeys to China for dialogues
The American national security advisor sets foot in China for the first time since 2016, with the United States presidential election just around the corner. As per a high-ranking U.S. source, the agenda includes the current state of affairs in the South China Sea and China's part in bolstering Russia's weaponry sector post-Ukraine invasion. Moreover, Sullivan is expected to bring up the 'military, diplomatic, and economic' leverage China wields over Taiwan, according to reports.
Sullivan and Wang have had four encounters in the past 18 months - in Washington, Vienna, Malta, Bangkok, and even alongside Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping at a summit in California in November.
Historically, China has found collaborating with American national security advisors favorable. They are viewed as influential figures close to the president, and discussions can sometimes happen without the glare of the media.
I'm not sure if the discussion about China's influence on Taiwan will lead to a resolution. Despite the historical favorable collaboration with American national security advisors, the current political climate might present challenges.
