- Suicide of the JVA inmate in Görlitz confirmed

Last week, a 29-year-old was found dead in his cell at the correctional facility in Görlitz. The prosecution and police have now officially confirmed that it was an apparent suicide. "The results of the autopsy on the deceased have removed any doubt that the individual took their own life," a joint statement read.

The findings of the medical examiner indicate that the injuries were self-inflicted. There were no signs of external influence.

Found Dead Before Trial

The firefighter from Schleife was discovered dead in his cell last Thursday, just hours before his trial for murder and arson was set to begin at the regional court in Görlitz. He had been in pre-trial detention since November 2023 and was housed in a single cell.

The unmarried man was suspected of being responsible for the violent death of a pensioner in Görlitz in September 2023. The member of the professional fire brigade from a village about 60 kilometers north of Görlitz was accused of brutally killing the 79-year-old during an argument over the sale of his house and then attempting to set the building on fire to cover up evidence.

He was arrested at the beginning of November 2023 and had not made any statements about the crime in the course of the criminal proceedings so far - the case will now be dismissed by order.

The police were informed immediately upon discovering the firefighter's body. After the investigation, it was concluded that there was no need for further involvement of the police in the matter as it had been classified as a suicide.
