It's the big event that thousands of girls and boys have eagerly awaited: Three days after the official start of the school year, around 19,000 children in Thuringia celebrated their school induction. The highlight was the presentation of goodie bags filled with sweets, gifts, pens, and notebooks, which the first-graders received during small celebratory events organized by their schools. During these events, the new students also got to know their older peers, who had prepared special programs for them. Afterwards, the ABC scholars went home, where a spread of cake often awaited them.
Some families also host elaborate celebrations in larger groups at restaurants, while others use the school induction day for a special picnic or a trip to the zoo. According to the Ministry of Education, the number of six and seven-year-olds starting school this year is slightly lower than last year.
