Sudan's health minister acknowledges the outbreak of a cholera epidemic.
Authorities in partnership with Kassala's eastern state administration, UN entities, and specialists made a joint decision following the identification of the cholera virus in a public health laboratory. The minister refrained from disclosing the exact number of cases. Kassala and Gedaref states are significantly impacted by this issue.
Cholera can spread through contaminated water supplies and may result in rapid death if left untreated.
In the context of Sudan, a power struggle between the military, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF militia of Mohammed Hamdan Daglo's former deputy, has lasted since April 2023. UN data indicates that tens of thousands of lives have been lost in the conflict. More than 10.7 million individuals have been internally displaced within the country, while over 2.3 million individuals have sought refuge in neighboring states.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan brings the nation dangerously close to a food crisis, and providing humanitarian aid becomes nearly impossible, as reported by aid agencies.
The UN has been actively involved in Sudan, providing data on the significant loss of lives and displacement of people due to the conflict. The UN entities, along with other international organizations, are working tirelessly to deliver essential aid and resources to those affected by the crisis, including those in Kassala and Gedaref states, where cholera outbreaks are also occurring.
