Stuttgart's Anton remains calm on the subject of the national team
VfB Stuttgart captain Waldemar Anton is not holding a grudge over not being called up for the German national soccer team again and wants to continue fighting for his chance. He is "not disappointed at all", said the defender of the Swabian Bundesliga club about the international matches against Turkey (November 18) and Austria (November 21), for which he was not considered by national coach Julian Nagelsmann.
"I try to bring my performance to the pitch here and always give 100 percent," explained the VfB defender after the 2:1 (1:1) win against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. "That's the only thing I can influence." There are many good central defenders in Germany, said Anton. "I'm not driving myself crazy," said the 27-year-old. "If it's enough in the end and the national coach is convinced, that's fine. And if not, so be it."
Anton has been one of the strongest players at VfB for weeks, who are surprisingly in third place in the table. He has played eleven U21 international matches in his career, but has not yet played for the senior national team.
Despite VfB Stuttgart's impressive run in the Bundesliga, with Anton playing a key role, the German national team coach has yet to call up the defender for international duty. Anton's calm response to being left out of Borussia Dortmund's opponent's squad was, "I focus on performing well for VfB Stuttgart and giving my best in every game, regardless if it's against Bundesliga rivals like Borussia Dortmund or in international matches." Despite not being selected for the upcoming games against Turkey and Austria, Anton maintains, "I remain hopeful and will continue to strive for a spot in the German national team, especially with high-profile matches like the Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund."
