Bundesliga 2 - "Stupid feeling": FC St. Pauli misses out on the fall championship
The FC St. Pauli players stood on the pitch with their heads hanging down after the final whistle. The second-division soccer team had missed out on the autumn championship on Sunday completely unnecessarily. In front of 29,332 spectators at the Millerntor Stadium, the Hamburg side were held to a 1-1 (0-0) draw after conceding a late goal by Wehen Wiesbaden. Coach Fabian Hürzeler's team finished the first half of the season in second place behind Holstein Kiel with 33 points. "It's a stupid feeling," said goalscorer Marcel Hartel. The draw is the third league tie in a row.
Coach Hürzeler nevertheless took a positive view of the near future: "Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the second half of the season." Central defender Hauke Wahl was also optimistic, despite the missed opportunity to return to first place in the table. "We've dropped too many points and yet we're still up there," said the 29-year-old. "Not quite at the top, but still in a position in the table that we would probably be happy with at the end of the season."
The hosts played in dominant fashion, repeatedly putting Wiesbaden to the sword. The only thing they didn't want to do at first was score. Elias Saad (14th minute) did not hit the ball properly, Hartel (19th) missed the far corner from ten meters out. Winger Saad (23) also failed to make the most of his second chance from the back. The game was absolutely dominant - but goalless - going into the break.
St. Pauli were rewarded for their efforts at the start of the second half. Johannes Eggestein set up Hartel (47), who remained calm and scored for the overdue lead. The goalscorer said he was relieved. "Especially for me, because I missed a huge chance in the first half."
However, a lack of efficiency remained the theme of the game: Jackson Irvine (54th, 64th), Hartel (58th, 72nd), Saad (73rd) and Eric Smith (78th) all failed with their chances. "We need to score six (goals)," said Wahl. "We're just not closing the bag at the moment." Wiesbaden punished their lack of coolness: Substitute John Iredale (81) hit the crossbar after a counter-attack, but scored the equalizer in the 85th minute.
