Stumbling stones smeared with swastikas: Witnesses wanted
Unknown persons have smeared swastikas on stumbling stones in Gera's city center. A total of seven stumbling blocks were graffitied from last Wednesday to Thursday, the police announced on Monday. All of the graffiti has been removed. As there is no trace of the perpetrators so far, the police are asking for help from possible witnesses.
Stolpersteine are small memorial plaques that are set into the sidewalk on footpaths and commemorate victims of the National Socialists.
This vandalism act is a disturbing form of crime, as it aims to dishonor the memories of Holocaust victims. The graffiti also displays elements of extremism, showcasing hateful symbols and ideologies.
