Study: Prices for low-cost flights have fallen
According to the DLR, the overall volume of air traffic in Europe is still around ten percent lower than before the start of the coronavirus pandemic. The proportion of low-cost flights across Europe is around 35%, in Germany it is well below 30%.
The DLR calculates the ticket prices of low-cost airlines twice a year for its "Low-Cost Monitor". To do this, it selects representative flight routes of the major low-cost airlines in Germany - Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings, Ryanair, Easyjet and Wizz - and calculates average prices on the basis of various advance booking periods ranging from one day to three months. The results of the study are based on data from a reference week in July 2023.
According to the analysis, destinations in 45 countries were offered in the low-cost segment in summer 2023. As in 2022, the most popular destinations were in Spain, Italy and Germany. Almost 90 percent of the 735 routes were only served by one low-cost airline, it said.
According to the DLR, Eurowings has the largest low-cost airline offering in Germany with a market share of 51.1 percent. It is followed by Ryanair with 27.1 percent, Wizz with 8.6 percent and Easyjet with 7 percent.
