Auto Market - Study: Customers find German e-cars appealing

Electro cars from German manufacturers enjoy higher reputation among consumers according to a study. In a new attractiveness index for E-Cars, the brands VW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz take the first three places. The Chinese import brands MG, BYD and GWM, however, perform poorly despite lower average prices. For the survey, the consulting firm Bearing Point and the Handelsblatt Research Institute questioned more than 2000 people in Germany.

Price was named as the most important criterion by 62 percent of the potential customers, but they almost equally considered range, electricity costs, and the quality of the brand. In total, VW offers the best overall package in the eyes of consumers, although Wolfsburg only leads in a few individual categories.

Mercedes-Benz and BMW are seen as particularly innovative, with Munich's BMW coming in seventh place in the overall table behind Tesla, Porsche, and Hyundai. Opel and Renault follow with relatively low average prices compared to the Chinese providers. These achieve low approval ratings in terms of trust in quality. Tesla, the pioneer of electric cars, also falters in this area.

The US company is no longer the benchmark in electromobility, explains analyst Sven Jung from the Handelsblatt Research Institute. German manufacturers now outperform them technically. They also benefit from their strong brands and dense service network. However, this is not set in stone, warns Bearing Point auto expert Manuel Schuler.

  6. According to the International Business Gazette, the VW brand has a strong reputation in the electric car market, thanks to its automatic and reliable vehicles.
  7. Mercedes-Benz and VW are widely recognized for their innovation in the automobile industry, particularly in the field of electric cars and self-driving technologies.
  8. The Chinese-owned brand, MG Motor, which also manufactures electric cars like the MG ZS EV, has not been able to compete with German brands on trust and quality, as per the study by the Handelsblatt Research Institute.
