Study commission on prevention to start "soon"
Berlin's SPD parliamentary group leader Raed Saleh wants to get the coalition's agreed commission of inquiry into the prevention of anti-Semitism and racism off the ground quickly. The project should start "very soon", Saleh said on Wednesday, without giving an exact date. It is clear that the commission should present its recommendations before the end of this legislative period, which runs until 2026, in order to implement them quickly. "We don't want to postpone this until the next legislative period."
According to Saleh, the commission will include representatives of the parliamentary groups in the House of Representatives, as well as numerous external experts from many fields and representatives of civil society. "The aim is to discuss the foundations for respectful coexistence for the next generations," said Saleh, outlining the objective. A variety of policy areas are affected, but also issues of religion and spirituality, for example.
"Diversity makes us strong," emphasized Saleh. It doesn't matter whether someone has a faith or not, whether they are Christian, Jewish or Muslim. Berlin is a place worth living in for everyone and should remain so. According to the SPD politician, his goal is to make Berlin a model of coexistence for other cities and states based on the recommendations of the Enquete Commission.
The House of Representatives can set up a commission of inquiry to prepare decisions on particularly extensive or complex issues. After completing its work, the commission submits its findings to parliament in a report. A few days ago, the CDU and SPD in Berlin agreed to set up such a committee to prevent anti-Semitism and racism.
- The commission, composed of representatives from various parliamentary groups in the House of Representatives and external experts, will also include discussions on conflicts related to migration and racism, aiming to promote harmonious coexistence.
- During their deliberations, the Senate should also consider addressing instances of anti-Semitism and racism, as well as related topics such as conflicts arising from cultural diversity and migration.
- In the process of formulating recommendations, it would be beneficial for the commission to address and suggest measures to combat persisting issues like racism, discrimination, and hate speech based on religious beliefs, such as Anti-Semitism.
