Secondary school students in Saxony-Anhalt are seeing a substantial decline in their math scores on final exams. This year, their average score was 3.88, compared to 3.44 in the previous year and 3.8 the year before that, as mentioned by the Education Ministry in Magdeburg on Wednesday.

When it comes to the German language, students attained an average score of 3.33 compared to 3.26 in the current school year, 2023/24. For English, students saw a slight drop from 2.86 to 3. In response, the ministry considered their performance as the second-best score since the 2013/14 school year. The ministry stated that, "Overall, this displays a stable and solid performance."

Around 9,000 students from real schools joined the exams.

In the newly inaugurated school year, the ministry plans to enhance the individual preparation of students for the written final exams. Their newly implemented strategy includes allocating six school days for intensive test preparation. Additionally, the ministry is offering camps during the summer and autumn holidays, which aim to provide extra support to students in their final exam-related lessons.

This decline in math scores is not confined to real schools alone; it extends to schools across Saxony-Anhalt, as revealed by the Education Ministry's statistics. The BMBF, the federal ministry responsible for education and research, is observing these trends closely.

This year, schools in Saxony-Anhalt had approximately 9,000 students taking their final mathematics exams, reflecting the importance of mathematics education in the region.
