Student numbers decline in Lower Saxony
The number of students in Lower Saxony has fallen compared to the previous year. According to initial preliminary results from the Federal Statistical Office, a total of 194,005 students are enrolled at universities in Lower Saxony in the current winter semester 2023/2024. This is 1.4 percent fewer than in the previous winter semester.
In Bremen, however, the number of students has risen compared to the previous year. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 38,185 students are enrolled in the current winter semester 2023/2024, which is 1.5 percent more than in the previous winter semester.
This means that the trend in Bremen is the opposite of the national trend. In Germany, the number of students in the current winter semester has fallen by 1.7 percent compared to the previous year. According to the Federal Statistical Office, there is also a difference between universities and universities of applied sciences. For example, 2.4 percent fewer people are currently enrolled at universities than last winter, compared to just 0.5 percent fewer at universities of applied sciences.
At the same time, contrary to the decline in the total number of students, there are more and more first-year students in Germany. The number of first-semester students at universities has increased by 1.2% compared to the previous year: In the 2023 academic year (summer semester plus winter semester), 479,300 people began studying for the first time - this was 5600 people more than in 2022.
Despite the decrease in student numbers nationwide, the number of students enrolled at universities in Lower Saxony remains high, totaling 194,005 in the current winter semester 2023/2024.In contrast to the decline in student numbers at universities across Germany, there has been a steady increase in the number of first-year students, with 479,300 beginning their studies in the 2023 academic year.
