Bundesliga - Strong support: Streich praises SC keeper Atubolu
After SC Freiburg's fortunate 1:0 win in Mainz, a visibly relieved Christian Streich gave goalkeeper Noah Atubolu extra praise. "He played a great game. We needed that too," said the SC coach, praising the number one's strong performance. "He was really good."
Atubolu made several saves to prevent the Breisgau team from conceding a goal in Sunday 's match, making him the match winner alongside Michael Gregoritsch, who scored the winning goal. "I'm very happy," said the youngest Bundesliga goalkeeper at the age of 21 afterwards.
When Atubolu, who was trained in the club's own talent factory, was promoted to regular goalkeeper at the start of the season, this bold move drew some skeptics. The faltering performances in the first few games seemed to prove the critics right. However, Atubolu has since blossomed into a reliable back-up for the Europa League participants.
"He is developing very well. We leave him alone and support and help him wherever we can. Even in phases when he makes mistakes. But everyone makes them, even Manuel Neuer," said Streich. The coach added: "We are convinced of him. Noah still has a lot to learn, but he can already do a lot. He's in exactly the right place and is going his own way."
