Strong gusts during salvage of freighter "Sabine"
The salvage of the freighter "Sabine" in Emden harbor could be further delayed due to strong gusts of wind. A decision is to be made this afternoon as to whether the stricken ship can dock on a so-called semi-submersible, a submersible pontoon, said salvage manager Stephan Müller on Sunday. In view of the weather risk, this could be postponed until Monday - strong winds are "a challenge" for the work boats. The 85-metre-long and 9.50-metre-wide inland waterway vessel sank on 5 October at Emden's Südkai while being loaded with a good 1100 tons of grit for unknown reasons. The crew managed to save themselves.
The delayed salvage operation of the "Sabine" could lead to potential accidents during the shipping process. The challenging weather conditions with strong winds are not favorable for the safe transportation of the stricken ship.
