Laura Freigang, a national football player, is facing two challenges at the moment. Firstly, she's striving to secure a spot in the German Olympic squad for Paris. Secondly, her current contract with Eintracht Frankfurt is set to expire in the summer, and there are whispers that she might exercise a buyout clause.

"Ever since we got back from the World Cup and qualified for the Olympics, my main objective has been to make it onto the team," stated Freigang before Germany's next European Championship qualifier against Poland on Tuesday (6:00 p.m./ARD) in Gdynia. "I'm well aware of my predicament and I know that it's by no means guaranteed for me to attend such a tournament." In the recent 4:1 victory over Poland in Rostock on the previous Friday, she played in the second half.

Freigang played for the national team during the 2022 European Championship in England and the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, but under the previous coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, she didn't see much playing time. However, her current coach Horst Hrubesch doesn't see her as a starter either. "She doesn't score enough goals. The strengths of Laura are evident, as she's a player who can make runs forward. I'm aware of it all," stated Hrubesch. He added, "There's more to her."

Hrubesch can only select 18 players for the Olympics. "Everyone is trying to fulfill their role in the team as much as possible. I believe we're all giving it our all, and we want to be part of it," said Freigang. "Of course, I'd love to be a part of it, that's no secret. But you somehow learn to live with the rest."

Freigang's contract situation? "Everyone is aware: I'm extremely happy in Frankfurt," she shared. "We're in talks, and that's also no secret. All other details I can't— and don't want to— reveal." Freigang is known as an emblematic figure at Eintracht, having the Frankfurt phone number 069 tattooed on her body. She's been a member of the team since 2018.
