Strike restricts rail traffic in Lower Saxony and Bremen

The warning strike by the train drivers' union GDL is also leading to numerous train cancellations in the northwest. Not only Deutsche Bahn services are affected, but also trains operated by Nordwestbahn and Regio-S-Bahn in Hanover. What travelers should watch out for.

Failures - Strike restricts rail traffic in Lower Saxony and Bremen

The warning strike by the German Train Drivers' Union (GDL) has severely restricted rail traffic in Lower Saxony and Bremen. The emergency timetable has started, said a spokeswoman for Deutsche Bahn (DB) in Hamburg. Many regional and long-distance connections have been canceled, but individual trains are scheduled to run on some routes. Deutsche Bahn therefore advises train travelers to inform themselves on the Internet. "The stations are relatively empty," said the spokeswoman. Many train passengers had apparently prepared for the warning strike.

One of the aims of the warning strike is to emphasize the union's demand for a reduction in working hours for shift workers. The industrial action began nationwide in passenger transport on Thursday evening at 22:00. The strike is due to end at 10 p.m. this Friday.

According to the railroad company, trains will be running on some regional routes on Friday. "However, this is only the case to a very limited extent," said the railroad spokeswoman. For example, individual trains were scheduled to run on the Norddeich Mole - Hanover and Bremerhaven-Lehe - Osnabrück routes - in some cases with delays.

However, train travelers in Lower Saxony and Bremen must not only be prepared for cancellations at Deutsche Bahn, but also at the railroads of the Transdev Group, which includes the Nordwestbahn and the Regio-S-Bahn in Hanover. In addition to the wage talks at Deutsche Bahn, the GDL also considers the negotiations with Transdev to have failed.

Nordwestbahn reported numerous train cancellations on its website. In some cases, however, replacement bus services were to be used, for example on the route between Wilhelmshaven and Osnabrück.
