Turn of the year - Stress for animals: LBV calls for ban on private fireworks displays
For some, New Year's Eve fireworks are a must at the turn of the year, others are more skeptical: The Bavarian nature conservation association LBV has now pointed out the negative consequences for wildlife. The loud bangs and light reflections harm nature and its inhabitants, the association announced in Hilpoltstein on Monday.
The LBV therefore called for a ban on private fireworks displays. Instead, centrally organized fireworks displays should suffice. Towns and municipalities could take care of this and the night-time disturbance of nature would then be limited to one location.
"The intense noise triggers the flight reflex in wild animals. It then takes them a very long time to calm down again. This nocturnal flight costs them valuable energy, which they need to survive, especially on long, cold winter nights," said LBV biologist Angelika Nelson.
Nelson continued: "Birds react strongly to firecrackers and rockets on New Year's Eve." They would then flee to great heights and not land for a long time. When birds flee in flocks in great panic, they can crash into glass panes or power lines.
