Streich on goalless Adamu: "Needs a sense of achievement"
Freiburg coach Christian Streich has defended the still goalless summer signing Junior Adamu. "It's not that easy," said the SC Freiburg coach ahead of the match against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday (3.30pm/Sky). When the striker joined Sport-Club in the summer, he was "bursting with energy", reported Streich. However, Adamu was slowed down by a protracted patellar tendinitis. He had not been able to settle in with his new team.
Junior Adamu has started twice this season for the Bundesliga club from Baden, and Sport-Club lost both times, most recently on Wednesday in the second round of the DFB Cup against second-division side SC Paderborn. In the Bundesliga home game against Gladbach, he is likely to be back on the bench for the time being.
Nevertheless, things could have turned out differently for Adamu if his goal after coming on as a substitute in the match at Eintracht Frankfurt had not been a few centimeters offside. "Junior has strength like an ox, he's all muscle, but now his head has to calm down and he needs a sense of achievement," said Streich.
That would also do the whole team good after the cup exit. "After the game, they were very disappointed with themselves and the result," reported the SC coach. He had worked through the mistakes with the team in the video analysis and had also spoken to some of the players individually. "Now we can go into the next game with renewed courage."
In terms of personnel, the situation has not improved due to several long-term injuries. Only Yannik Keitel is an option again after muscular problems. "Normally he wouldn't be in the squad, but due to the situation, he may slip in," said Streich.
Junior Adamu, who has been struggling with goalscoring for SC Freiburg, needs a sense of achievement to regain his form, according to coach Christian Streich. Despite his physical strength, the Bundesliga striker has not settled into the team yet and missed a crucial opportunity due to offside in their previous game.
