Free time for recreation or relaxation - Strawberry season arrives earlier for pick-your-own enthusiasts.
Nowadays, people who like to pick their own fruits are being drawn to strawberry fields in various locations across Schleswig-Holstein. These signs have appeared earlier this year than in the past, explained Tilman Keller from the Horticultural Research Institute in Jork, Lower Saxony. Farms are now able to provide enough ripe, red berries for self-pickers making it a profitable marketing opportunity. Several farmers have installed walkable plastic tunnels over their strawberries to make them ripen faster and extend the strawberry season.
Keller mentioned that the outdoor strawberry season has already started around May 20th this year. Last year, 73 farms in Schleswig-Holstein cultivated a total of 783 hectares of strawberries. The practice of growing strawberries under high walkable plastic tunnels has become increasingly popular, leading to earlier harvests. This, as the chamber noted, helps to reduce risk in a volatile market and provides a more balanced distribution of labor throughout the season.
